HEBREW (עִבְרִית) LANGUAGE CLASSES:

Our Introductory Hebrew language classes begin with learning the Hebrew script in the first Term and focus on conversation and basic introductory grammar. Subsequent Terms enforce the Hebrew script and concentrate on learning basic Hebrew grammar, increasing vocabulary, and reading and writing practice. In addition, popular Hebrew songs are also taught. Our Hebrew classes emphasise literacy (for those interested in Biblical Hebrew) and conversation (for those interested in learning to speak modern Hebrew).

EarthDiverse offers the following Hebrew language classes on a rotating basis:

  • Hebrew 102: Introductory Hebrew 2 (offered in 2020 Term 4)

Our Term 4 Introductory Hebrew 102 course begins on Tuesday morning 20 October. Our Term 4 Intermediate Hebrew 202 course begins again on Wednesday evening 21 October. Our next intake of new beginning Hebrew learners will happen in 2021 Term 1,

DISTANCE-LEARNING OPTIONS: Our Introductory Hebrew course for beginners offers distance learning options for those unable to attend classes in-person. Live-streamed classes are available via free Zoom software, or those unable to attend the date and time of the actual class sessions can watch the live-recorded video sessions on their computers, laptops, tablets or mobile devices and study at their own pace. This facility is not currently available for our Intermediate Hebrew courses.


HEBREW 101: Introductory Hebrew – Part 1

This course will next be offered in 2021 Term 1.

Introductory Hebrew 101 classes are for beginners with no knowledge of Hebrew or the Hebrew script. During this Term we focus on learning the Hebrew (עִבְרִית) script, while focusing on basic conversation, grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing.

Our First Term Introductory course begins with learning the Hebrew (עִבְרִית) script, writing and reading practice, and includes basic introductory grammar and conversation. The Second Term course (Hebrew 102) continues with Hebrew (עִבְרִית) script reading and writing practice, and with introductory grammar, vocabulary, and conversation. Our Hebrew Instructor also uses songs to introduce the Hebrew language to new students.

DISTANCE-LEARNING OPTIONS: Our Hebrew 101 course for beginners offers distance learning options for those unable to attend classes in-person. Live-streamed classes are available via free Zoom software, or those unable to attend the date and time of the actual class sessions can watch the live-recorded video sessions on their computers, laptops, tablets or mobile devices and study at their own pace. Video recorded sessions will be available soon after each class finishes so that you may watch the recorded video via any web-browser at your leisure. Your instructor will provide details on how to access your classes before your course begins.

Cost per person per Term (8 classes):

  • Waged: $104 (includes $4 online registration fee)
  • Unwaged (unemployed, students, seniors): $84 (includes $4 online registration fee)

The course fee includes all teaching materials, provided as handouts. Individual notebooks for note taking are not provided. Students must bring their own notebooks and pens/pencils.


HEBREW 102: Introductory Hebrew – Part 2 (offered 2020 Term 4)

This course is currently offered in 2020 Term 4.

The Introductory Hebrew 102 course builds upon the learning of the Hebrew script in Term 1, along with basic conversation, vocabulary and grammar, and continues to focus on reading, writing and speaking Hebrew. More emphasis will be placed on basic Hebrew grammar, increased vocabulary, and reading and writing skills. Both contemporary and traditional Hebrew songs will be learned.

Hebrew 102 is currently on offer for 2020 Term 4 for our Introductory Hebrew learners. This course meets Tuesday mornings from 11:00-12:30pm beginning on Tuesday 20 October and continues for eight consecutive weeks ending on Tuesday 8 December 2020.

The course fee includes all teaching materials, provided as handouts. Individual notebooks for note taking are not provided. Students must bring their own notebooks and pens/pencils.

HEBREW 103: Introductory Hebrew – Part 3

This course is not currently offered in 2020 Term 3 but will be offered again in 2021 Term 1.

The Introductory Hebrew 103 course continues to build upon the learning completed in Hebrew 101 and 102, with continued emphasis on increasing conversational skills, learning additional rules of Hebrew grammar, expanding vocabulary, and improving our reading and writing skills.

The course fee includes all teaching materials, provided as handouts. Individual notebooks for note taking are not provided. Students must bring their own notebooks and pens/pencils.


HEBREW 104: Introductory Hebrew – Part 4

This class is not currently offered in 2020 Term 3 and will be offered again in 2021 Term 2.

The Introductory Hebrew 104 course completes the four-Term Introductory Hebrew course and lays the foundation for the Intermediate Hebrew courses offered in 2020 Terms 3 & 4. This course continues to build upon the learning completed in Hebrew 101-104, with continued emphasis on increasing conversational skills and one’s understanding of Hebrew grammar, expanding vocabulary, and taking our reading and writing skills to a higher level in preparation for the Intermediate course.

The course fee includes all teaching materials, provided as handouts. Individual notebooks for note taking are not provided. Students must bring their own notebooks and pens/pencils.


HEBREW 201: Intermediate Hebrew – Part 1

This course was last offered in 2020 Term 3.

Our Intermediate Hebrew 201 builds upon our four-Term Introductory course which lays the foundation for our Intermediate Hebrew classes. This class continues to build upon the learning completed in Introductory Hebrew 101-104, with continued emphasis on increasing conversational skills and one’s understanding of Hebrew grammar, expanding vocabulary, and taking our reading and writing skills to a higher level.

Our 2020 Term 3 Intermediate Hebrew 201 course is for those who began study in 2019. It continues to be offered on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:30pm. Our Term 3 classes begin on Wednesday 29 July 2020 and run for eight successive weeks, with the last class of the Term held on Wednesday 16 September 2020. Subsequent classes (Intermediate Hebrew 202-204) will be held in the same time slot.

The course fee includes all teaching materials, provided as handouts. Individual notebooks for note taking are not provided. Students must bring their own notebooks and pens/pencils.

PLEASE NOTE that our Intermediate Hebrew 201 course does not have a distance-learning option.


HEBREW 202: Intermediate Hebrew – Part 2

This course is currently offered in 2020 Term 4.

Our Intermediate Hebrew 202 course continues the foundation for the Intermediate Hebrew classes begun in 2020 Terms 3. This class continues to build upon the learning completed in Introductory Hebrew 101-104 ands Intermediate Hebrew 201, with continued emphasis on increasing conversational skills and one’s understanding of Hebrew grammar, expanding vocabulary, and taking our reading and writing skills to a higher level.

Our 2020 Term 4 Intermediate Hebrew 202 course is for those who began study in 2019. It continues to be offered on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:30pm. Our Term 4 course begins on Wednesday 21 October 2020 and runs for eight successive weeks, with the last class of the Term held on Wednesday 9 December 2020. Subsequent classes (Intermediate Hebrew 203-204) will be held in the same time slot.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Ben Tobias

INSTRUCTOR: Hebrew classes are taught by our Israeli-Kiwi Instructor Benjamin Tobias. Benny was born in Israel and was raised as a fluent Hebrew speaker at Kibbutz Kinneret, located near the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret) in the Jordan Valley. He also served as a Captain in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). Benny moved to New Zealand in 1982, becoming a New Zealand citizen in 1984. He graduated from the University of Waikato with an LLB degree in 1994 and an LLM in 2007. For many years he worked for the New Zealand Transport Agency, both in planning and in a legal capacity. Benny is now partly retired, keeping himself busy with Ellys Physio and teaching Hebrew in his spare time. He is married and has 3 children and 3 grandchildren, who reside in New Zealand, Israel and Italy.

LOCATION: all language classes are held at Artmakers Trust, Norris Ward Park Arts Centre, 2 Seddon Road, Hamilton. The carpark entrance is off Seddon Road at the back of Norris Ward Park. The classroom is immediately to the left of the Waikato Society of Potters studio. There is plenty of free parking available in the carpark just outside the classroom. Bikes are also welcomed!
